Artificial intelligence has a branding problem.

- Confidently cite sources that don’t exist
- Produce language that subtly reinforces bias
- Drift off-brand or miss emotional nuance

Nonprofits don’t just communicate information. They communicate values.
Your language carries weight with:
- Donors who trust you with their resources
- Communities who trust you with their stories
- Partners who rely on your credibility
- Boards and regulators who expect accountability
When AI-generated content goes out without thoughtful review, the risk isn’t just embarrassment it’s erosion of trust.

A better question is:
What are we putting into this tool, and what are we trusting it to do?
Every prompt you write teaches the system something about:

Responsible AI use starts with awareness of inputs, not just outputs.
AI Doesn’t Understand Context. You Do.
AI can help you write a donor email.
It cannot understand the relationship history behind that donor.
AI can help summarize a grant application.
It cannot understand the lived experience behind the programs you run.
AI can help brainstorm messaging.
It cannot feel when language is unintentionally patronizing, exclusionary, or misaligned.
That context lives with your people, not the technology.
Which is why human review isn’t optional. It’s essential.
Responsible AI Use Isn’t Technical. It’s Thoughtful.
One of the biggest misconceptions about responsible AI is that it requires deep technical expertise.
It doesn’t.
Responsible AI use simply means:
- Being intentional about where and how AI is used
- Protecting sensitive information
- Reviewing outputs before they go public
- Ensuring AI supports, not replaces, human judgment
This is leadership work, not IT work.
And it’s accessible to organizations of any size.
The Opportunity (Yes, There Is One)
When AI is used thoughtfully, it can:

The goal isn’t to eliminate AI risk entirely. That’s unrealistic.
